Today at the Sackville River fishway we had our first Atlantic salmon for the year come through our trap. It was a 30 inch long and 10.7 pound male. The water temperature was 17 degrees Celsius.
Only a percentage of the fish heading up the river make it into our fishway counter – the percentage going up and down depends on the flow of water available for the fish to transverse the falls at the fishway rather than going up the fishway itself.
For the past several weeks the fishway has been full of gaspereau and white suckers, but with the sun out today the trap was full of gaspereau and suckers, and one male salmon eager to head upstream.
